Laying the Foundation
Teachers' Guides for Pre-AP* English
Created in 2002 by master AP* teachers, the guides are designed to teach students the skills they need in grades 6-10 in order to pass AP English exams in grades 11 and 12.
The guides help young students develop reasoning and critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze, discuss, and write about what they read. Skills are taught at greater depths of understanding each year so that students are prepared to master the challenging reading and writing assignments in AP English Literature and Language courses. In addition, the guides are aligned with the TEKS to increase TAKS scores. TEA has granted APS a $1.35 million grant for master teachers to conduct intensive training with the guides.
Districts across Texas are using the guides as the basic tools for their English Vertical Teams.
The guides include the following:
- Skill progression charts for grades 6-10
- Sample curriculum and teacher resources
- Lessons on close reading, grammar, composition
- Assessments
