"I believe that the LTF materials challenged the students in a way that they hadn't been challenged before, and the assessments, in terms of the synthesis questions for the labs and the unit assessments themselves, made the difference. Students were moved away from memorization and towards understanding—and this helps in the MCAS."

Barbara Plonski, Science Curriculum Director, Milton Public Schools (on why Milton students saw a 10% jump in Proficient on 2009 MCAS)

Training for English

These days, STEM-related topics seem to dominate the discussions among innovators in education, but a growing movement exists to add Arts to STEM so that it becomes STEAM. After all, without the arts, including English/language arts and reading, there is no outlet for science, technology, engineering, or math. Moreover, LTF Training and materials for Pre-AP and AP English teachers incorporate texts from subject areas outside of language arts. This promotes student discussion, analysis, and the synthesis of ideas across disciplines—and prepares students for the rigor of AP English classes in high school and, subsequently, advanced English classes in college.

During LTF English Training, strategies for teaching analytical reading and writing skills are demonstrated and modeled, weaving close reading, grammar, and composition together in interactive lessons that utilize selections from imaginative literature, nonfiction texts, and visual texts. Training also includes best practices in student journaling, pre-writing, composition, and revision and provides suggestions for student-generated technology extensions. LTF English Training enables Pre-AP and AP teachers to add depth to their existing language arts curricula and encourages middle school and high school students to strive for a deeper, more comprehensive understanding of English language and literature.

LTF English Training, which integrates critical strands from AP English Language and AP English Literature, meets the English Common Core Standards for the following areas:
  • Reading: Literature
  • Reading: Informational Texts
  • Writing
  • Speaking and Listening
  • Language
