Mathematics Trainer
Marilyn began working for LTF in 2004 as a consultant trainer when the LTF math guides were introduced. The following year, when the first Michael and Susan Dell Foundation grant drastically increased demand for LTF training, she joined the permanent LTF team. Marilyn says she has continued her work at LTF because she loves “doing” mathematics, and believes that “LTF offers something unique to students and teachers that enriches their curriculum.” Additionally, she “enthusiastically supports the LTF purpose of preparing more students for the rigor and expectations of Advanced Placement courses.”
The LTF math team’s ability to collaboratively create challenging and interesting materials for teachers and their students is a source of pride for Marilyn, as is her own growth in her contributions to materials development. She also says of her experience at LTF thus far, “I most enjoy my professional relationships with my colleagues and with the teachers in our trainings. Sharing our excitement for mathematics, learning from each other, and working toward common goals is so rewarding.”
When asked about the intersection of her personal philosophy of education with the LTF mission, Marilyn replied, “I believe that students rise to their teacher’s level of expectations, that they like to be challenged to think, and that they become excited about mathematics that is interesting and connected. LTF teacher training provides teachers with materials and strategies to do just that.” This conviction is reflected in a conversation she had with another teacher after she left the classroom: Marilyn recalls, “A Pasadena teacher and I were discussing what I most missed about no longer being a classroom teacher. I said that I missed having the chance to make an impact on students. The teacher responded, ‘Do you realize how many students you impact now when you do these trainings? I have changed the way I teach because of these LTF trainings!’”
Marilyn holds a BA in Mathematics and an MEd in Gifted Education. She taught high school math (including AP Calculus AB and BC) for 26 years before beginning her work with LTF. Marilyn’s other experience includes coordinating and coaching UIL Number Sense, Calculator Applications and Mathematics, serving as an AP exam reader, and presenting College Board summer institutes and one-day/two-day conferences. She was selected as Lake Travis High School Teacher of the Year twice.
