English Program Director
While she was still a full-time classroom teacher for the Pulaski County Special School District in Arkansas, Doris got to know a number of LTF staff members through College Board workshops and summer institutes. She identified with the LTF mission and was impressed with the work the staff was doing with Pre-AP and AP teachers, so she joined the LTF ranks as a part-time trainer when she retired. Doris soon began to contribute more significantly to LTF English projects through a full-time employment opportunity.
Doris identifies her intelligent and interesting colleagues as her favorite part of working at LTF. She also enjoys working together with the English team to make a difference in the lives of teachers and students across the United States. Doris is proud of the organization’s recent expansion beyond Texas. “For years there were teachers in other states who were begging for access to LTF materials and training, and we have finally been able to provide that access,” she says. She hopes for continued expansion, both geographically and technologically: “I hope we will continue to expand our online materials and services,” says Doris. “I believe the future of education truly lies in technology that we can only imagine right now.”
When asked how her personal philosophy of education aligns with the LTF mission, Doris replied: “My philosophy hearkens to the Chinese proverb: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. With LTF training, we are ‘teaching teachers to fish,’ providing them with the materials, skills, and training to develop their own infinite set of skill-based lessons instead of just handing them one ready-made lesson.”
Doris holds a BA and MSE in English and brings 35 years of classroom experience to LTF, 22 of which were spent in teaching Pre-AP and AP English literature. Before joining LTF in 2005, she also served as a reader for the AP English Literature exam and was a College Board consultant. Doris received the College Board Special Recognition Award in 1999.
