Mathematics Coordinator
Charla was first “sold” on LTF when she attended training through a grant that her school received. She continued to infuse the materials and strategies into her classroom and then started training for LTF on a contract basis in 2005. A few years later, in 2008, she had the opportunity to take a permanent staff position: Charla recalls, “I was so excited when Tammy Brown (the Math Director) asked me if I would be interested in come to work for LTF full time.”
Charla’s favorite aspect of her current role is spending face-to-face time with teachers in training sessions. “I like the interaction, sharing and learning with the participants in the trainings,” she says. She also has made important contributions to math materials development since joining the organization full time and is proud of her professional expansion into a more writing- and editing-intensive role. Charla looks forward to continuing to provide classroom teachers with relevant training opportunities and quality lessons and questions. Additionally, she would like to enrich and expand the current LTF mentoring program: about the future of LTF, Charla says she “would also like to … work on a more personal level with teachers, maybe modeling lessons in the classroom and/or mentoring the teachers.”
Prior to joining LTF full time, Charla taught high school math for 19 years in Oklahoma and Texas and conducted computer software training for four years at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. She holds a BS in Mathematics and Computer Science, an MEd in Secondary School Administration, and has continued her graduate studies in mathematics. Charla has been recognized as the Denison Teacher of the Year twice.
