English Overview

LTF training for Pre-AP English is designed to meet the needs of middle school and high school Pre-AP English teachers, grades 6 through 10. Beginning with sixth grade reading and language arts teachers, training provides them the resources and strategies at each grade level to prepare students for AP-level English courses in 11th and 12th grades. The training focuses on strengthening three core areas of student learning:

  • Close Reading: understanding written, spoken, and visual texts
  • Grammar: purposeful use of language for effect
  • Composition: written, spoken, and visual products

During training, strategies for teaching analytical and writing skills are demonstrated and modeled, weaving close reading, grammar and composition together in interactive lessons that utilize selections from fiction, poetry, essays, speeches, advertisements and visual texts. Training also includes best practices in student journaling, composition, and creative activities, enabling teachers to add depth to their existing curricula and to encourage their students to strive for a deeper, more comprehensive understanding of English language and literature.

LTF training in AP English Language and AP English Literature supports teachers in their efforts to prepare students for success on the AP exams and in their college courses. One-day seminars focusing on specific test-related topics and four-day summer institutes afford opportunities for AP teachers to gain content knowledge, instructional strategies, and hands-on experience in planning an effective curriculum.
